The Beards and Jackets Show: Episode 2
Travie Yak and Richie T are back for more as they respond to a listener’s concern over Richie’s blasting of the Nintendo 64.
They also discuss the film careers of “Rowdy” Roddy Piper and Jesse “the Body” Ventura, namely their joint effort in a pilot episode for a failed television series.
Plus, is nostalgia good or bad? Travie and Richie discuss this in regards to movies from the 1990′s and the fact that they always seemed to need to have a song tie-in with a rapper for some reason.

Hey, the dog Rich is talking about near the beginning is Tito, from Disney’s Oliver and Company. Cheech Marin does, in fact, play the voice of a chihuahua.

Super Mario 64 – I’m with the masses here, and really did enjoy the game. It’s one I can come back to after years of not touching it, start a new game, and have it all come back to me. It’s a fun wave of nostalgia, and more entertaining to me than most of Mario’s side-scrollers.
Legend of Zelda – I loved Ocarina of time, again siding with the majority, but I really could never get into Majora’s Mask. So we’ll call that even there, I suppose.
Castlevania – Never played it. I’ve never really been into that whole series, really.
Pokemon Snap – WONDERFUL.
(Side note – I really enjoyed Monster Rancher. Trav, I still want Digimon.
)
Pokemon Stadium – The mini-games are really fun for quick co-op fun, and one of the best things was that you could port your Pokemon straight from your Game Boy games to make it more fun. It gets boring after a while of playing with the game’s preset creatures with never-changing attacks. So if you don’t have the accessory to port your Pokemon over, I admit it loses some luster.
Star Fox 64 – I agree that the multiplayer was dumb. I never played it. Really though, this is the only Star Fox game I really enjoyed. All of those later with Fox being part of an RPG or whatever… those were stupid.
Banjo-Kazooie – To be honest, I never played this game until last year for the first time. My best friend owned it, and it looked okay, but I really never cared enough to play through. He gave it and the sequel to me when he was getting rid of his old games, and I sat down late last year and played through most of it. Still haven’t beaten it, but it basically plays similar to Mario 64. Collect x amount of this item to get a reward, y amount of that item to get a reward, get so many rewards to progress through the harder levels until you save Banjo’s sister. Surprisingly fun, considering I only just played it recently. Also, had RARE not been bought out by Microsoft, Banjo-Kazooie would have made a FANTASTIC addition to the Smash Bros. world.
I don’t think I ever played a wrestling game on the 64. We should get together sometime and do it to it.
Quake 2 – I have never played any of the other Quake games, so there’s no basis for comparison, but I’m going to assume it’s better than 1, and not quite up to par with 3. Regardless, it was a gift given to me by someone, and I expected to hate it like I hate Turok on the 64. Surprisingly, it was super fun. Probably the first ‘kill lots of aliens with ridiculously unrealistic, but still fucking awesome guns’ game I played and enjoyed.
Gauntlet Legends – Love this game. So much fun with friends, and even enjoyable alone. Unfortunately, I never lived near a quality arcade, so I can’t compare the console port to the arcade version.
-I know you stopped here, buuuut…-
Harvest Moon 64 – THIS MADE FARMING GAMES COOL BEFORE FACEBOOK EVER FUCKING EXISTED.
Also, I can’t believe I didn’t put this one down on my list, but:
Conker’s Bad Fur Day: Rude, crude, filthy, and pop-culture references aplenty. Not meant for children, this game has cursing, sex jokes, drug jokes, and a boss battle against an opera-singing pile of shit. To be sure, my most favorite Nintendo 64 title ever.
Closing thoughts: Though I included the boomerang controller as part of my argument, I really didn’t like the way it handled. Aesthetically, it was great. Upon implementation, it sucked monkey nuts.
